Ethiopia: The Birthplace of Coffee
In the 9th century AD, Ethiopia became the original home of coffee. According to legend, a goat herder named Kaldi discovered the coffee berry when his goats consumed it and couldn't sleep afterwards. He shared this discovery with a local monastery, leading to the cultivation of coffee. Over time, coffee spread from the Arabian Peninsula to Europe, and today it is grown in various regions with similar climates worldwide.
It's worth noting that all Arabica beans, regardless of where they are grown, trace their origins back to Ethiopia. These beans were taken to different countries where they adapted and thrived in tropical, mountainous regions with distinct wet and dry seasons. Ethiopia boasts an ideal environment for coffee cultivation, fostering the growth of numerous heirloom varieties with unique characteristics.
